Today, October 1, 2026, the Japanese Literature and Digital Humanities Research Group (JLitDH) was officially launched.
The relationship between Japanese literature and digital technologies is by no means a recent development. From ancient and classical literature to modern and contemporary studies, a wide range of research and practical initiatives have accumulated over time, including the digitization of texts and materials, the development of databases and digital archives, and the structuring and analysis of texts.
This research group was founded by a group of volunteers with the hope of creating a “commons” where people interested in the intersection of Japanese literature and digital humanities can meet across periods and fields, learn from the accumulated achievements of earlier research and practice, and share their experiences, questions, challenges, and possibilities.
Rather than seeking to represent any particular historical period or field, we hope to create an open space where anyone interested in Japanese literature and DH can come together regardless of position or level of experience.
For the time being, there will be no formal membership system or annual membership fee. We plan to invite broad participation for each research meeting or event as it is organized, although some events may require a participation fee.
We warmly welcome not only those who are already engaged in DH, but also those who would like to begin exploring it, as well as those who are interested but are still unsure how to get started.
This “commons” is not something that is complete from the outset.
We ourselves do not yet know what kinds of research and practices will encounter one another here, or what new questions and connections may emerge.
That is precisely why we hope to develop this space gradually together with everyone who chooses to take part.
We hope it will become a place where people can talk, think, and learn together freely about Japanese literature and DH across periods, specializations, and positions.
We very much look forward to building this community together.
